contents background

I like this as a background for my contents page. It develops the country rustic feel of the magazine and creates synergy with the front cover and dps.

Actual dps
Oliver Tandon or should I say Olly T! is the new big thing in the country music industry. He is an Indian lad who was born in England. He became fascinated with all music when he was 7 years old and pushed himself to play the drums. He grew up in a small unknown town, in North Lincolnshire and attended the local school where he improved on his drumming skills. He took music at GCSE and overall got an A* mainly because of his drumming and guitar playing skills which inspired him to become a musician.
He went on to become the number 3 guitarist in the country and got a job singing and playing his guitar and drums in a local pub called The White Horse. He then went on to Manchester University to study music for two years, until he finally got his degree. This just shows anything is possible. Oliver joined a band called ‘Different Oceans’ where he was the drummer. They won 3 awards including breakthrough band of the year 2015. After two years of playing in the band he decided that he wanted to pursue in his guitar playing, so he went solo singing. He was taken on by ex-country star Billy Ray Cyrus who described him as “The next me [Billy Ray Cyrus] but better!” Over the past year Oliver Tandon, who goes by the name of Olly T, produced the number 2 Country Album of the year, which included hits such as “Cowgirl” and “Passionate Summers”.
When asked “Who inspired you to become a country singer?” he replied “Well all my life I have been intrigued by the work of Johnny Cash. The song Ring of Fire gave me chills and in my room when I was alone I would dance and sing to his whole album! Haha”
This just shows that you can live up to your idols and your dreams. The interviewer Ben Foster had this to say about him “Oliver…I mean Olly T haha is such a great guy, he is very down to earth and shares the same interests as any teenager. I hope that he goes on to do great things, because I really do believe in him” This just goes to show that this kid has great potential.
Olly is in the line up to get the award for the best country musician. He is up there along with Carrie Underwood and pop cowgirl Taylor Swift. However even though he is new to the country singing life, he is leading the race to the number one spot. He is the most talked about on Facebook, Blogger and Twitter where big stars such as Gary Barlow who tweeted “OMG! You need to hear this new lad called Olly T. He is only 17 years old and he blows my breath away. I mean I have never felt so much emotion in someone’s singing. This guy WILL GO FAR! #OllyTalltheway” This got 2000 re tweets and 4570 likes, which tells us that he has the public behind him.
One girl posted on Facebook a picture of her and Olly T hugging after one of his gigs and post title was, “I love Olly, can’t believe I got to meet him. He is well fit, his cheeks are the most adorable things ever. We will get married someday haha”. He is not only famous from his singing but from his looks as well, very cheeky!
Now listen up! Particularly the girls. Olly T has released his tour dates and where they will be. He is performing all over the UK between the 1st of March and the 21st of January. He will be performing at amazing places such Manchester Arena, O2 arena and Wembley stadium. He has acts such as Arctic Monkeys, The Vamps, Train, Tori Kelly, Disclosure and many more big names. He has been named as a “must see!” act by The Daily Times and even The Sun has given him 5 stars for his performances. So you must go!  This will be his second solo tour of his career and he aims to do twice as good.
Even though Olly has risen rapidly to fame, we found out from his interview with ITV he still goes back to his home town and performs in local pubs and parks. “Even though I am going up in the world, I never forget where I’m from and I catch up with the lads and even perform back at home. Then my mum cooks me up a toasty roast dinner haha”.
He has even performed for the Duchess of Cambridge, who said “I am not a huge fan of country music, but I was fascinated by this young boy. He blew me away”. There is even talk of him performing on the X Factor next year. So far he has only performed in the UK, however in 2016 he will be performing all over Europe in countries such as Germany, France, Spain and even outside Europe where he hopes to make it big in the USA!
The second name Tandon is not unfamiliar; his dad was also a star in the music industry. Pav Tandon, was highly known for his Bhangra music back in India. He also won awards for songs such as “Punjabi Skies” and “Praying”. He met Olly’s mum when he came to England to pursue his career as an author. His mum’s name is, Sue who is a teacher at the local primary school. They met when Mo went into her school to talk to the children about one of his new books, then had their first child Rory a year later. Rory is now 25 and is studying at Manchester University, preparing to become a journalist. They had Olly 8 years after Rory and his father was a big influence on him getting into music.
Olly has just released a new music single “Sunshine in the rainforest” which he hopes will be top of the country music charts by the end of the week. The song is currently placed 5th in the charts behind the likes of Taylor Swift and Dolly Parton. In a previous interview we asked Olly about his new song and he had this to say “The song is about me really, how the unexpected happened. I didn’t expect to be sitting in a chair talking to you a year ago and now hear I am”
This song is just one of many from his new album “Broken Ladders” which again reflects his journey. The album consists of 13 songs and is available to pre-order on ITunes. Even though it has not yet been released, it is number 3 in the album charts. Wow!
Billy Ray Cyrus noticed Olly T after he posted the song “Cowgirl” on YouTube and it got over 3000 likes in an hour! He also had a page on Facebook where he would post himself doing covers of other songs like “The cave” by Mumford and sons, “Love Story” by Taylor Swift and “Bruises” by Train. These songs were often shared by his friends and family on Facebook so the videos quickly spread around the country for others to see.
If you thought it couldn’t get better for this lad…then you’re wrong. He also has his own fan page and is going out with pop princess ‘Tori Kelly’ who is famous for her work with Professor Green and the song “Lullaby” which was popular in the UK charts. Olly and Tori have been going out for about 4 weeks now and there is even rumours that they are preparing to release a Christmas song together. So sorry girls he is taken.
Pull quote

Comparing front cover pictures 13

The front cover of this music magazine has a male artist on the front. He is looking directly into the camera which makes direct address with the audience. He fills most of the page with his head and it is a central image, which suggests that he is the main focus of the front cover. Also the background is blurred, which also suggests that he is the main feature of the front cover; there is nothing in the background that stands out. I could guess the music genre from the image because of the signifier of the western hat and the neckerchief, which are both signs of country and western.

There is no text over the models face which tells us that the publisher wants his face to be clearly seen. The picture is a close up head shot and was taken from eye level, which shows emotion in the models face to connect with the reader. The model is wearing a cowboy costume and there is blue sky in the background, these things are usually associated with the genre of country and western, so the front cover has some traditional features.

The model is smiling which is a positive emotion and tell stereotypical and conventional for country and western. There is a range of different colours used in the image, but the main colours used are the colours dark/light brown and cream, these are conventional colours that people would usually associate with country and western. These colours used are also representations of country and western, so the audience can see that he is happy. By the looks of the background, I think the model is in a field with trees in the background, which is very stereotypical of country and western.

The eyes of the model is quite dark and does not stand out to the audience. I think that there is a light to the left of the model, which is reflecting onto his face to make a sunset effect on the left side of his face and it makes a shadow on the right side of his face, which is very dark. I think that the models hat has been manipulated so it looks smooth and neat to the audience. There is emphasis on the face of the model; the lighting coming from the side.

The theory I can apply to the image is the theory of Mulvey because the male is gazing, showing a friendly image, I think this because he is smiling. Also this could appeal to an older female audience; he is an older man with a friendly face.

The front cover has a female model on the front. The model is looking directly at the camera and the model is central on the page which forms direct address with the audience. The background is plain which suggests that the image is the main feature of the magazine. I wouldn't be able to tell that the magazine is a country magazine from the image; the magazine is not conventional and the model is not dressed like a stereotypical, country model. However the flowers and the bright background can be associated with the genre of country and western.

There is no text over the models face, which suggests that the publisher wants the audience to focus on her face and could be a way of selling the magazine because of her good looks. The shot type is a head and body medium shot; it has the models face and body showing, also it is taken from eye level. I think that the models curly hair and bright red make-up signifies country, also the flowers and the bright yellow background represents a more modern country theme. The bright yellow colours in the background could represent the sun shinning on her, which is traditionally used in country magazines, however because it is a modern country magazine the publisher decided to use a bright, plain background instead.

The body language of the model tells me that she is a very relaxed person who is very 'flirty' and is very pretty. The expression on her face is is very neutral, however she is gazing at the camera and tilting her head which gives her a playful look. The picture was taken in a studio and I know this because the background is plain and has been edited. There is a variety of different colours used on this front cover. The main colours are pink, red and yellow, which are very bright colours which could be associated with country music. I think the colours represent beauty because they are very pretty colours, which compliment the model.

The eyes have dark eye shadow around them, to make the white in her eyes stand out to the audience. The light is shining directly onto the models face so no shadow is formed and her face is really bright. I think that her eye make up has been manipulated to make her eyes darker and her skin has been manipulated to make her look more pretty and perfect. The image focuses on the person and slightly the surroundings because the flowers at the front are very clear and bright, however the ones in the background are blurred. The emphasis of the image is on the models face/head; that has had the most work/effects done on it. I think this image supports the theory of Winship "the gaze" because the model is gazing into the camera to connect with the reader.

Both magazines are different because they are for a different TA. The first magazine is clearly for an older TA and the second magazine is for a younger TA because a younger model has been used. The second magazine is more modern because they break conventions by changing the models look and the style of the image, however the first image is much more traditional and is more of a stereotypical country magazine. Both magazines use the model to draw in the reader by having their face being the main feature of the front cover. I think both magazines appeal to both genders because they both use a gaze, like in the first magazine the model is a male that looks happy, however he is gazing into the camera to appeal to an older female audience so it connects with both. The second magazine uses a female model who looks very pretty and is an artist that many girls idolize, however she is pulling a playful gaze at the camera to attract a male audience.

Contents page for country magazine plan

My background will be brown like a laminate floor, which keep the country theme. I decided to have pictures in the left corner as well as the right. In the pictures to the left i decided to have Olly T in the middle frame and 4 different girls around him in the the other frames. This could hint to the female audience that he is a good looking guy and that he a ladies man because he has girls around him. However I also want girl pictures so it could attract a male audience as well. In the top right corner I chose to have 3 pictures of boys so it balances out the number of male pictures and female pictures, also this could appeal to a homosexual audience also so I will have at least 1 male and female cheeky picture on the page.

My masthead at the bottom of the page will be in 3D so it connects with my TA because it is more modern and eye catching. Also at the bottom of the page, under the masthead, I will have a dateline of when the magazine was published.
